In the book of the prophet Jeremiah (8:22), God cries out “When will
the health of my people be restored?” Many of us join in that cry
today as increasing numbers of Californians live sicker and die
younger because we lack adequate health insurance.
However, there is also good news. More people of faith each day
have been not only praying but speaking out – telling the truth,
sharing our stories, calling for a real and moral solution to the health
care crisis. We know that a real solution will require that we all work
together:
• our state needs to be involved in making health care affordable
• our employers have to contribute their fair share to the cost of health care
• insurance and drug companies have to learn to live with reasonable profits
• and we all have to take responsibility for taking care of our health
As we speak out, we thank God that our elected representatives are beginning to listen. They are working in Sacramento on health care reform now and they must finish by mid-September. This is a moment of opportunity to make sure that they know that we expect real change. We are asking congregations all over the state to join together in calling for health coverage that:
• includes the care real people need
• we can all afford to buy and use
• stays affordable as we get older |
